What do “Motivational Speakers” and “Palm Readers” have in common?
— They both feed on the energy of the weak; filling hopelessness with a sense of encouragement, but that’s all it is.
Success is not set in stone; at least not the kind that will give you magical powers.
I recently had the tremendous opportunity to visit a motivation speaker, the talk was meant to be about Resilience, Forgiveness, Setting your Goals, How to Achieve said goals, How to become a Millionaire before you’re Thirty, and most importantly how to marry that beautiful girl of your dreams.
At the end of the talk; the sweaty, mouthy, loud motivational speaker gave the audience the auspicious opportunity to ask him questions.
As he pronounced this opportunity, he uttered the words “So the blessed within the audience, please put forward to me your goals; and I shall guide you to success..”
A few people did just that.
And then there was me.
I asked the motivational speaker simply this, “Sir you spoke about becoming a Millionaire and marrying the girl of dreams, and as motivating as it was; I’d just like to ask you — Why the fuck aren’t you a millionaire yet and why are you still single?”
He chuckled, looked around the audience with amazement and pronounced; “My friend, that is EXACTLY the kind of behaviour that is keeping you from achieving your goals and dreams. Let go of the negativity and all good things shall come to you.”
So pretty much bullshit is what he was saying.
Much like palm readers, he’d resorted to the one thing motivational speakers and palm readers know how to do best — dodge bullets.
Now I must confess; maybe the motivational speaker had no intention of becoming a Millionaire or Marrying the girls of his dreams — maybe his true intentions really are to help other people reach their goals; for a lovely price-tag of a 120$.
But I’m a firm believer in practice what you preach; and let your opinions and theories be put to test.
One of the most inspiring figure that I’ve had the pleasure of being aware of is undoubtedly, the Late Christopher Hitchens.
His unwavering ability to test his opinions and evolve as they were put to test is what drove me to pursue writing and garnering the ability to let my opinions and ideas always be open to challenge — the ability to evolve as they so progressed.
Christopher Hitchens shinning moment came, for me, when he proclaimed that the practice of Waterboarding practiced as a form of Interrogation was in fact not a form of Torture — when faced with the challenge of letting his opinion on waterboarding be put to test; he agreed without a shred of a doubt to undergo waterboarding.
This was the result:
And hence his legacy was now paved with an unwavering image of integrity.
After being subjected to the interrogation method known as ‘Waterboarding’, he didn’t shy away from immediately evolving his opinion on the matter and hence coming to the conclusion that the process was not only horrifying and inhumane; it was thus in fact “Torture”.
This complete sense of allowing his opinions be put to test is what earned Mr. Christopher Hitchens his prolific mark within the world of Journalism as a man of his word, with integrity embedded within it to the very core.
Sean Hannity on the other hand, ran for the hills when he was requested to subject himself to the same challenge.
Point here being, Motivational Speakers will only do so much for you; they’ll give you a sense of hope. But that doesn’t always guarantee what their intentions are — what one must understand is, to them THIS IS A BUSINESS.
A business, proven to be quite lucrative, is one filled with hypocrisy and often shameless claims of unproven theories.
No one rule to Success can be applicable and guarantee the same result to each and every individual.
Success, whatever that may mean to you, is not a linear passage with a roadmap.
It’s a maze often filled with misery and hopelessness until one truly figures out the way to the exit to the beauty that lays ahead.
I’ll let Mr. Michael Gambon explain the rest.
