Certainly, to use a really bad but real-life example…it’s sort of the same as having a string of bad relationships; and being conditioned into believing probably every other person you meet will cheat. I think I understand why trust is so hard to rebuild. There’s a clip of Malcolm X discussing it as well, I can find it on youtube, if you wish — It’s an interview where talks about the same points you touched on. :)
My friend who works in Law-Enforcement has a similar life-view as you, he knows that people are afraid because of the reputation but hardly anybody realises that infact Policemen go through a great-deal of stress and it makes it difficult for them to make an assessment because their life is on the line every day they leave for work. I’m sure people can make the argument that uniformed officers can easily oppress but hearing my friend talk about his experience; it’s like they too feel guilty but he says the Body-Cams have really helped the situation and it’s alot more disciplined now.
Not too stretch this any further, I’m sure you have a lot to do this thanksgiving — Wish you a very happy and fruitful one.
Thank you so much for having this discussion, it was much appreciated.
I’ll link a personal post below I wrote a while ago on feeling uncomfortable for being brown and why I felt the way I do.
Maybe that might help explain why I came to form the opinions that I did and why I truly believe in “Seek first to understand than to be understood”.
It’s been wonderful chatting to you ma’am, Thank you and I’m very grateful to have had this conversation with you.
If there’s a thought that I can leave you with, it is that if I haven’t travelled as much as I have — I probably would not be as open minded.
Warm Regards and Happy Thanksgiving,
